Before you act...
...remember, if you have time, to take the following items with you, if you are considering leaving home and do not expect to return before taking action:
- House keys
- Child benefit book
- Rent book
- Marriage certificate
- Birth certificates
- Passports
- Any money you may have
- Cheque books
- Building Society book
- Credit and Charge Cards
- Some clothes
- Diary and Address Book (if kept)
Also, you should inform other people about the abuse, such as your General Practitioner, as they may be required to give evidence on your behalf in court.
Deciding whether to take court action can be very hard. On average women experience 25 – 35 assaults before seeking help. Don’t wait that long. One violent act may be enough.
Even if you decide against court action for now, it is very important that any assaults you suffer are reported to your GP and the police. Try to obtain a Crime Reference Number from the police if you can. You never know when you may need proof for your future protection.
Remember it is your right not to be assaulted, intimidated or harassed, nor to live in fear. The law is designed to protect you so you can live in peace and safety.
