What should I do first?
Make an appointment to see a solicitor.
Do this as soon as possible, preferably with a firm which has a partner or a department specialising in Domestic Violence and Family Law. There, Domestic Violence is always treated as a priority, so tell them what it's about.
The solicitor will prepare a statement for you. To present your case effectively it is important to be as accurate as you can about dates and details of incidents.
It will help greatly if you make some notes about what you remember the sooner the better, before the details fade.
It is not necessary for there to have been a witness to an assault or an incident, although it may assist (providing the witness(es) are prepared to be involved).
Details of medical treatment or police involvement will also be very helpful.
